The Civil Services is the backbone of the Indian government machinery, as it constitutes of all the departments, which runs the state administration. The constitutional machinery of India works on the gears of the civil services. It has been an integral part of the Indian Governance system for almost a century now. The British set up this system to aid them in governing this vast country (hence the similarity with the British governance system).
The stage 1 of the civil services exam is prelims, which is a screening test for candidates and comprises of two papers with questions of objective or MCQ type.

This examination is meant to serve as a screening test only; the marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Main Examination will not be counted for determining their final order of merit.

The questions in the UPSC Prelims Exam are of objective type or Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
There is a 'Negative Marking' in the IAS prelims exam for each incorrect answer. The negative marking for incorrect answers will be 1/3rd (0.66) of the allotted marks of that question.
The GS Paper II (CSAT) is of qualifying in nature and candidates should score a minimum of 33 percent in this paper to qualify to the next stage of the exam i.e. Civil Services Mains.
Blind candidates are given an extra time of 20 minutes for each paper in the prelims exam.
It is mandatory for the candidates to appear in both the papers of civil services prelims exam for the evaluation.
The marks scored by the candidates in the preliminary examination are not counted for the final score.
The second stage of the Civil Services Exam for IAS is called as the Main Exam, which is a written examination and comprises of 9 papers.
The 9 papers are as following Paper-A (Compulsory Indian Language); Paper-B (English) are qualifying in nature, while the other papers like Essay, General Studies Paper I, II, III, and IV, and Optional Paper I and II are considered for the final ranking.

The number of interviewees is approximately twice the number of vacancies. The interview will carry 300 marks (with no minimum qualifying marks). Here, one needs to be thorough with news in national and international affairs, trends, currents of thought, new discoveries, and of course, do not let go of the firm grasp on the subjects of academic study.
Those who clear the mains and the interview are appointed to the various services under the Civil Service fold depending on the aggregate marks obtained in the mains. Services are allotted keeping in mind the rank and expressed preferences.The Civil Services are broadly divided into - The All India Services and the Central Services.

Candidates must apply in the Common Application Form devised by the Commission for its examination, which can be purchased from the Designated Head Post Offices/Post Offices (specified in Appendix III of the notice) throughout the country against cash payment of Rs. 20/- (Rupees Twenty only). Each such form can be used only once and only for one examination.
