Cytology is the study of the microscopic appearance of cells, particularly for the diagnosis of abnormalities and malignancies. A cytology technician job involves preparing, staining, and examining microscopically specimens of body fluids, secretions, and exudations from any part of the body to determine whether cellular structure is normal, atypical, or abnormal.
Students who are interested to pursue a career in cytology need a B.Sc. with Microbiology/Life Science/DMLT. The duration of the course is 6 months. Some institutes also offer 1 year Advanced Histopathology & Cytology Technicians course for which the eligibility is first class B.Sc. in Microbiology/ chemistry/ zoology/ cytology/DMLT/Life Sciences.
Students are trained in the use of microscope to examine various body secretions. Course also includes theoretical inputs on cell structure and formation, different kinds of cells in the body, examination of cells, detecting abnormalities and so forth.
Cytology technicians can most often be found working in pathology laboratories, hospitals, nursing homes and clinics, community health care centers and so forth.
