International English Language Testing System:

IELTS or the International English Language Testing System is an evaluation of the individual's competency measure of the fluency of English for non-native speakers who wish to enter universities were the courses are conducted in less complex English language. The admission into around 5,000 institutes, colleges and universities in over 120 different countries do require an established English fluency level as prescribed by the Educational Testing Services.

There are two forms of IELTS - Academic and General Training.
The Academic Test is for people applying for higher education or exploring job opportunities in an English speaking atmosphere. It focuses on evaluation of academic language which is quintessential for studying or training.
The General Training Test is for those individuals approaching English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training. This test is also used for immigration purposes in the countries of Australia, Canada, UK and New Zealand. Basic language skills essential for social and professional communication is evaluated.

Eligibility:


International English Language Testing Students are required to have a valid documented proof of their identity specifically the Passport book (which is also mandatory if the test is being done outside the individual's native country)
IELTS Test The student can take a maximum of 4 attempts per month.
IELTS Listening Preparation The minimum age required is 16 years to take the test.

Fee for the Examination:


The fee is tentatively at Rs 11,300/- The fee will vary as per the International currency rates.

Duration:


The IELTS test lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Validity:


This test is valid for two years from the date of the exam. There is an increase of validity to 3 years for the Australian General Training Test.

Test specifications:


The IELTS test is test analyzing the various components of the individuals' skill set.

The Listening component is gauged by 4 tasks expected to be done in a span of 30 minutes. These tasks include listening to auditory clips of native English speakers over 4 contexts (social conversation, social monologue, education setting conversation of 4-5 people and an academic based monologue). The student is expected to solve subsequent questions.
The Reading component is a 60 minute long test which is different for either type of the Test. The Academic Test includes 3 long texts taken from academic literature such as books, journals, magazines. The General Training Test includes 3 long texts from a more colloquial environment such as advertisements, notices, magazines, newspapers.
The Writing component has a maximum possible of 60 minutes, in which the given 2 tasks given to either type of the Test is different. The Academic IELTS's first task expects to summarize or explain what the given diagram, graph, table or chart purports. The second task is to write an essay in a response as a point of view, argument or problem. The General Training Test's first task instructs the individual to write letter (personal, formal or semi-formal) requesting information or explaining the situation which would be presented. The second task is to write an essay in a response as a point of view, argument or problem.
The Speaking Component is allotted a maximum possible time period of 11-15 minutes in which 3 parts are understood. The first part would include questions about yourself and familiar topics such as the home, family, work, studies etc. In the second part you will be given a card with a topic, for which you have 1 minute of preparation to speak for 2 minutes on the given topic. The third part remains an further questioning of the topic received in Part Two allowing a more abstract and elaborate discussion.
