Graduate Record Examination:

GRE or the Graduate Record Examination is a standardized test by the Educational Testing Services. This test is taken by students who are applying for postgraduate courses in the United States of America and some of the institutes of around 90 other countries.

It proves to be an essential admission document which establishes the students' competency and estimates the extent to which undergraduate education has developed an individual's verbal and quantitative skills in abstract thinking.

Eligibility:


Students are required to have a valid passport as a valid documented proof of their identity. There is no other restriction by the Educational Testing Services but there may be so by the institutes which are being considered or applied to.

Fee for the Examination:


The fee is tentatively at Rs 13,180/- The fee will vary as per the Rupee-Dollar rates.

Duration:


Three hours and forty five minutes
The paper based GRE requires a maximum possible of 30 minutes per section of the Analytical writing. 25 questions per section allotted a time frame of 35 minutes for the two sections of the Verbal Reasoning. 40 minutes for each of the two sections of Quantitative Reasoning consisting of 25 questions each.

The computer based GRE is split into 30 minutes each for each task of the first section. The Verbal Reasoning has 20 questions per section expected to be completed in a time frame of 30 minutes for each section. The Quantitative Reasoning has 20 questions per section and is slotted to be completed in 35 minutes per section. The time and the number of questions for the un-scored or Research section are variable.

Validity:


Five years from the date the test is taken.

There are actually two GRE examinations:
The General Test conducted on the paper consists of three main parts and is only available in areas where computer-based testing is unavailable. The first being analytical writing which is split up into two sections, one section for each issue and argument task. The next four sections consist of two verbal reasoning and two quantitative reasoning sections in varying order.

The computer based GRE General Test analyses four major components of the concerned individual which are Analytical writing, Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and the Research or the un-scored section. The Analytical Writing has two separate tasks focusing on the individual’s analysis of the issue and the individual’s analysis of the argument. There are two sections each for Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. The un-scored section is unidentified and may appear in any order after the Analytical Reasoning. The Research section is identified and usually at the end of the test but is not scored.

The Subject Tests include testing knowledge in the specific areas of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology. The duration for each is 170 minutes.

In India there are only twenty two centers which offer either Paper test or a computerized test.
