What is the TOEFL Test?

Test of English as a Foreign Language:

TOEFL or the Test Of English as a Foreign Language is a n evaluation of the individual's competency measure of the fluency of English for non-native speakers who wish to enter universities were the courses are conducted in English. The admission into around 9,000 institutes, colleges and universities in over 130 different countries do require an established English fluency level as prescribed by the Educational Testing Services.

Eligibility:


TOEFL Complete Information Students are required to have a valid documented proof of their identity specifically the Passport book (which is also mandatory if the test is being done outside the individual's native country)
TOEFL Exam The student has a maximum of 3 attempts per month.

Fee for the Examination:


The fee is tentatively at Rs 11,425/- The fee will vary as per the Rupee-Dollar rates. There are additional fees for late registration of Rs 2700/-, rescheduling at an additional of Rs 4035/-, reinstatement of cancelled scores at an additional fee of Rs 1250/-, additional scores reports at an additional fee of Rs 1250/- each, and speaking-writing score review of Rs 5380/- each.

Duration:


The TOEFL test lasts 4 hours, excluding the half an hour required to be checking in.

Validity:


This test is valid for two years. There is no restriction on the number of attempts, but one cannot take the test twice during a 12 day period or thrice during a month.

Test specifications:


The TOEFL iBT test is internet based test, using the QWERTY keyboard, analyzing the various components of the individuals' skill set. There is a paper based test available in places where the internet facilities are poor or absent, this form of testing is not found to be done in India.

The Reading Task is a 60- 80 minute long test which involves 36-56 questions which require the individual to read 3-4 paragraphs from the academic text and answer subsequent questions.
The Listening Task is gauged by 34- 51 questions being answered in a span of 60-90 minutes. These questions require the individual to be listening to lectures, classroom discussion and conversations and then answer the subsequent questions.
The Speaking Component is allotted a maximum possible time period of 20 minutes in which 6 tasks are given to the individual. The individual is required to express an opinion about a familiar topic and speak based on reading-listening skills.
The Writing component has a maximum possible of 50 minutes, in which the given 2 tasks evaluate the individual's essay opinionating the issues of the reading and listening tasks.

The test taker is entitled to have a 10 minute break after the Listening Task and before the Speaking component. There may be some extra questions in the Reading and Listening components but they are un-scored.

Test Centers in India:


There are 61 cities have the TOEFL iBT computerized centers in India but it is recommended to take an appointment a week in advance as these centers are not open every day.
