The Dental Hygiene Program prepares individuals interested in providing preventive, educational and therapeutic dental services to the public. A dental hygienist's task is to assists dentists in treating patients. Thus, they usually work under the supervision of a dentist and are trained to perform the specific clinical procedures that aim to prevent dental disease. They help fill cavities, make and repair artificial teeth, apply and remove periodontal packs, expose and process dental X-Rays, and help in straightening of teeth. They also advise patients on dental health and hygiene.
Students need 10+2 with science subjects or equivalent. The duration of the course is 2 yrs. Some institutes also admit students with the eligibility of SSC pass with 50%.
The dental hygiene programme aims to teach students all about oral diseases, maintenance of oral health, prevention of diseases, and so forth. They are also taught about assessment procedures, fitting and repairing artificial teeth, filling cavities, working with gum problems and so forth. Other subjects may include anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, nutrition, radiography, histology, periodontology, pathology, dental materials, dental hygiene theory and so forth.
Most dental hygienists work under dentists. Other job avenues are dental hospitals, dental departments of government and private hospitals, dental research centers, community health centers, and so forth.
